The first Paddington was a huge success, and a huge surprise. A follow-up was inevitable and this sequel, I’m glad to say, is much more delightful than the original. This story takes place shortly after the previous installment, with Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) now having settled in properly with the Brown family (a cast of characters including Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins and Julie Walters). Not only that, but the residents of the street are also glad to having Paddington living with them - except for Peter Capaldi’s incessant Mr. Curry. Paddington is aiming to get a present for his Aunt Lucy’s (Imelda Staunton) birthday and has his eyes on a pop-up book of London. However, there is more to the book than meets the eye, as it secretly has clues to a horde of expensive jewellery.

Hugh Grant swaps out Nicole Kidman as the villain of this film and manages to steal the book before Paddington can save up for it. Framed for the robbery, Paddington is sent to jail while Grant’s Phoenix Buchanan uses his acting disguises to hunt for the clues around the city. While Paddington does his best to make friends in prison (enter Brendan Gleeson, the movie’s best asset), the Browns work hard to try and clear Paddington’s name.

Paddington 2 ups the action and the comedy for its sequel, with a story that manages to draw out both in equal measures. Featuring a high speed steam train chase, as well as a disastrous haircut, Paddington 2 does offer everything. Scene stealers Grant and Gleeson win this movie, but the sweetness and pure charm of Paddington aids in making this film a family delight. Score: 69/100
